Change it at the specified interval, and expect it to be more sensitive to contamination than the final drives because of the small oil volume. Check the swing brake at the same time: a brake that drags heats the oil and degrades it, and it is a common root cause.
Procedure at a glance
| Step | Note |
|---|---|
| Park on level ground and follow lockout | The swing gearbox is in the center of the upper structure. Level ground is required for a meaningful level reading, and the machine must be safely isolated before working there. |
| Locate level and drain plugs | Confirm from the documentation. Some designs combine fill and level; some have a separate fill point on top. |
| Clean thoroughly before opening | Contamination around these plugs goes straight into the gearbox, and the small oil volume means a little contamination matters more. |
| Drain and examine | Color, smell and metal content. This is a small oil volume, so what you find is concentrated and informative. |
| Check the swing brake function | With the machine level, swing and release. Drift, run-on or noise indicates brake or relief problems, which heat and degrade the oil. |
| Check the swing pinion and gear grease points | Some designs require separate greasing of the pinion and ring gear teeth, which is often mistaken for a gearbox oil task. Follow the chart. |
| Refill to the correct level with the specified oil | Not a general-purpose substitute. The swing gearbox is loaded gear-to-gear and the oil carries the additive package that protects the teeth. |
How to confirm it
- Park the machine level and isolate it properly
Level ground gives a valid level reading, and the swing area requires proper lockout. Neither is optional, and the second one is a safety matter rather than a technical one.
- Identify the correct plugs and the correct oil
Confirm the drain, level and fill points and the specified oil grade from the documentation. Swing gearbox designs differ and improvisation here causes recurring problems.
- Clean the plug area before opening anything
With a small oil volume, a small amount of grit does proportionally more damage. This step matters more here than on a larger sump.
- Drain fully and examine the oil
Look for color, smell and suspended material. Milky means water, dark or burnt means overheating, and metal means gear or bearing wear. In a small volume, each of these signals is relatively concentrated.
- Check the swing brake and relief at the same time
A swinging machine relies on the brake to hold position. Check for drift and run-on with the machine level. Dragging brakes are a frequent and under-diagnosed cause of hot, degraded gearbox oil.
- Refill with the specified oil and re-check
Fill to the specified level and re-check after operating the machine. Record the oil grade and what the drained oil looked like.
What to do about it
Contaminated oil: drain, flush and refill, and find the water entry point. The swing gearbox is usually more exposed than a final drive, so a failed seal or an inadequately sealed fill point is the common route.
Metal in the oil: the unit needs opening. Establish whether the gears are serviceable before deciding between a bearings and seals repair and gear replacement; the cost difference is large, and the decision should be made on inspection rather than assumption.
Oil consistently running hot or degrading faster than the interval: check the swing brake release and the swing relief pressure. Brake drag is the usual cause and it progresses to a much larger failure if left.
If the swing pinion greasing has been missed because it was assumed to be part of the gearbox oil task, restore it. These are separate maintenance items on the designs that require both, and confusing them is common.

How often should swing gearbox oil be changed?
Follow the machine specification, and consider shorter intervals in wet or dusty conditions because of the limited oil volume. The cost of the oil is trivial against the cost of the gearbox.
Is swing gearbox oil the same as final drive oil?
Not necessarily. Check the specification for each; some machines use the same grade in both and some do not. Using one where the other is specified is a small economy with a large potential cost.
My swing gearbox oil is consistently dark. What should I check?
Swing brake release first, then swing relief pressure, then whether the oil grade is correct. Oil that degrades faster than the interval suggests almost always has an external cause: heat, contamination or the wrong fluid.
