Excavator swing not working or swinging weakly

Swing faults split into three families: the swing does nothing, the swing is weak, or the swing will not stop and hold. Each points at a different component group.

Short answer

Swing that does nothing at all is usually a control or brake fault. Swing that is weak and fades when hot is motor wear or relief. Swing that will not hold position, or drifts, is brake or relief. Start by deciding which of the three you have.

What you will notice

SymptomWhat it usually points to
Swing completely dead in both directionsSwing lock solenoid, swing brake not releasing, or the swing spool not stroking.
Swing weak and slow, worse when hotSwing motor wear or swing relief valve. Follows the warm-oil pattern.
Swing drifts after releasing the controlSwing brake or swing relief. The machine should hold position on a slope.
Grinding or rumbling noise while swingingSwing reduction gearbox or swing bearing — mechanical rather than hydraulic.
Swing accelerates on its own on a slopeBrake not holding. A safety issue as well as a fault.
Swing works one direction onlyDirectional spool section, relief valve or motor fault specific to that direction.

Most likely causes

CauseHow to confirm it
Swing brake not releasingThe solenoid or the brake circuit. The motor is commanded but the brake holds it.
Swing lock solenoid or its wiringNo swing at all, because the machine believes the swing lock is engaged.
Swing motor internal wearWeak and slow when hot, with normal behavior when cold.
Swing relief valve weakPressure low, and swing force falls away without the motor being at fault.
Swing reduction gearbox damageNoise, metal in the gearbox oil, backlash beyond specification.
Swing bearing wearPlay between upper structure and carbody, felt as a clunk when the swing reverses.
Low pilot pressureSpool strokes partly, giving a slow and vague swing.

How to confirm it

  1. Confirm the brake releases

With the swing control operated, listen for the brake release and check that the swing lock is off. If the machine makes no attempt to move at all, the fault is upstream of the motor.

  2. Test swing relief pressure when hot

Read swing pressure with the function stalled against relief at operating temperature. Low relief pressure explains weak swing at a fraction of the cost of a motor.

  3. Check whether the weakness tracks temperature

Cold-normal, hot-weak means clearance leakage in the motor. Consistent weakness means pressure or control. Same test as for travel, same diagnostic value.

  4. Listen and locate the noise

Gearbox noise follows swing speed and is present regardless of load. Bearing noise changes with load and often appears as a clunk on reversal. Locating the noise is more useful than describing it.

  5. Check swing gearbox oil

Drain a sample for metal and water. A gearbox with clean oil and intact gears is a seal and bearing job; one with metal is a rebuild or replacement.

What to do about it

Swing that does nothing at all is usually resolved in the control circuit. Test the brake release solenoid and the swing lock before considering the motor, which is a much larger cost.

Weak swing on a hot machine with low relief pressure: change the relief valve first. If relief holds specification and swing is still weak when hot, the swing motor is worn.

Swing gearbox noise means the gearbox must come apart. Confirm whether the gears are intact before deciding between a seal and bearing repair and a full replacement — photographs of the drained oil and of the opened unit let us quote the right option.

If the swing drifts or runs on a slope, treat it as urgent. A swing brake that does not hold is a safety fault, not just a performance complaint.

Frequently asked

My swing is weak but not dead. Do I need a swing motor?

First check relief pressure when the oil is hot. A weak relief valve produces exactly this symptom at a small fraction of the cost. If relief holds specification and hot swing is still weak, motor wear is the likely answer.

Why does the machine clunk when I reverse the swing?

Play in the swing bearing, the gearbox or the mounting. It should be measured rather than tolerated — bearing play that grows becomes a structural problem rather than a parts problem.

Can swing problems be electrical?

Yes. The swing brake release and the swing lock are electrically controlled. A machine with a sound motor, sound gearbox and correct pressure that still will not swing usually has an electrical cause.
